About Body Sensations Interpretation Questionnaire (BSIQ)
The Body Sensations Interpretation Questionnaire (BSIQ) is a self-report instrument designed to assess individuals’ interpretations of bodily sensations. Developed by Clark et al. (1997), the BSIQ evaluates the tendency to misinterpret physical symptoms as indicators of serious health issues, a hallmark characteristic of panic disorder and anxiety-related conditions.
Purpose of the Tool
The primary purpose of the BSIQ is to:
Assess the extent to which individuals interpret bodily sensations in a catastrophic manner.
Differentiate between individuals with panic disorder and those without anxiety-related conditions.
Provide a reliable measure for use in clinical and research settings to explore cognitive distortions associated with panic and health anxiety.
Description of Tool
Cognitive models of panic disorder suggest that misinterpretation of bodily sensations plays a central role in the onset and maintenance of panic attacks. The BSIQ was developed to operationalize and measure this cognitive bias, offering a structured way to evaluate individuals’ interpretations of common physical symptoms.
The BSIQ consists of a series of bodily sensations (e.g., increased heart rate, dizziness, chest tightness) and possible interpretations. Respondents are asked to rate the likelihood of interpreting these sensations in various ways, including catastrophic (e.g., “I’m having a heart attack”) and non-catastrophic (e.g., “It’s just exercise”) explanations.
Format: Self-administered questionnaire with Likert-scale responses.
Scoring: Higher scores indicate a stronger tendency to interpret bodily sensations in a catastrophic manner.
Psychometric Properties
- Reliability: The BSIQ demonstrates high internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha values exceeding 0.80 in clinical samples.
- Validity: The tool has strong discriminant validity, effectively distinguishing individuals with panic disorder from non-anxious controls.
- Sensitivity to Change: The BSIQ is responsive to therapeutic interventions, making it a valuable measure for tracking treatment progress.
Age Group
The BSIQ is suitable for individuals aged 18 years and older. It is widely used in adult populations with anxiety and panic-related disorders.
