Introduction
Major depressive disorder (depression) is a serious medical condition that can negatively impact your mood, behavior, and thinking. It is treatable. Depression can cause sadness, and/or loss of interest in once-exciting activities. Depression can cause a host of emotional and physical issues that can impact your ability to perform at work and at home.
This disorder is characterized by episodes lasting at least two weeks (though most episodes last much longer), and involving clear-cut changes to affect, cognition, and neurovegetative function. There are also inter-episode respite remissions. Although a diagnosis can be made based on one episode, the disorder is often recurrent in most cases. It is important to distinguish between normal sadness and major depressive episodes.
Although bereavement can cause great suffering, it doesn’t usually lead to major depressive disorder. If they occur together, the functional impairment and depressive symptoms are more severe than those associated with major depressive disorder. The prognosis for these cases is also worse. Antidepressant treatment may help in recovery from bereavement-related depression.
Sadness is part of human nature. When a close friend dies or they are going through a difficult life event, people may feel saddened or depressed. These feelings usually last for a short time. If someone feels persistent and severe sadness over a prolonged period of time, they might have a mood disorder like major depressive disorder (MDD).
MDD, also known as clinical depressive, can have a profound impact on your life. It can affect mood, behavior, and other physical functions such as sleep and appetite.
