Drug Abuse Screening Test Urdu (DAST)
The Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST) is a widely used screening tool designed to assess and identify individuals who may have a drug abuse problem. It was developed by Harvey A. Skinner in 1982 and has been validated in various populations to provide a reliable measure of drug abuse severity (Skinner, 1982).

The Urdu version of the DAST aims to make the screening process more accessible to Urdu-speaking populations. This version retains the core questions and structure of the original DAST but is translated and adapted to ensure cultural and linguistic appropriateness for Urdu speakers.
The DAST consists of 28 items that inquire about various aspects of drug use and its consequences. Respondents answer each question with “Yes” or “No.” A higher score on the DAST indicates a greater likelihood of drug abuse or dependence. The questions cover a range of issues related to drug use, such as frequency, consequences, and perceived control over drug use.
Using the DAST Urdu Version can help healthcare professionals, counselors, and researchers in Pakistan and other Urdu-speaking regions to quickly screen individuals for drug abuse problems. Early identification of drug abuse can lead to timely interventions and treatments, improving outcomes for individuals and communities.
