Introduction
The Emotional Appetite Questionnaire (EAQ) is a psychological assessment tool that evaluates the relationship between emotional states and eating behaviors. This scale has been adapted into Turkish from the original version developed by Nolan et al. (2010). The purpose of this article is to present the Turkish adaptation of the EAQ, which aims to assess emotional eating correlates in various contexts, including body mass index (BMI) relationships.

Scale Information
Scale Type: Adaptation
Measured Characteristics: Emotion, Appetite, Eating behavior
Subdimensions: Negative/Positive States, Negative/Positive Emotions
Scale Structure and Scoring
The EAQ comprises two subdimensions and includes a total of 22 items. The subdimensions are:
– Negative/Positive Emotions (14 items, e.g., “sad when…”).
– Negative/Positive States (8 items, e.g., “under pressure…”).
The scale employs a 9-point Likert-type response format, where 1 indicates significantly less eating than normal, 5 indicates no change, and 9 indicates significantly more eating than normal. The total scores for negative emotions and states yield the Negative EAQ score, while positive emotions and states yield the Positive EAQ score.
Psychometric Properties
The psychometric evaluation of the EAQ included assessments of validity and reliability. The reliability was tested through internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha, resulting in a reliability coefficient of r=0.730. Construct validity was assessed using factor analysis, confirming that the EAQ is structured around two primary factors related to emotional variables and their impact on eating behavior.
Applicability and Target Group
The EAQ is suitable for adults. The assessment tool focuses on identifying emotional patterns in eating behaviors, enabling researchers and clinicians to understand how emotions affect dietary intake.
Translation Process
The translation of the scale into Turkish involved three proficient English-speaking researchers. The initial translation was compared to the original English version to identify inconsistencies and ensure conceptual alignment. This rigorous process led to the final version of the Turkish EAQ, which was then validated with university students and volunteer hospital staff.
