Family Support Scale Urdu
The Family Support Scale (FSS) is a psychometric tool used to measure family support for stroke patients and has also been translated into the Urdu language for the convenience of Urdu-speaking individuals. The Urdu version of the Family Support Scale is identical to its English counterpart in terms of its content and structure. The content validity of the Urdu version of FSS was ensured by a team of experts who critically analyzed each item to determine its relevance and appropriateness in the Urdu language and Pakistani culture. The Urdu version of FSS demonstrated excellent internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha of .92, which indicates a high degree of reliability and consistency.
The FSS is a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 17 items that measure the level of family support provided to stroke patients. Each item is scored on a five-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). The total score is obtained by adding up the scores of all the items, with higher scores indicating greater family support. The validity and reliability of the Urdu version of FSS were established through a pilot study that involved a random sample of 40 Urdu-speaking stroke patients and their family caregivers. The participants were selected from military and civilian hospitals in Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Peshawar.
The reliability of the FSS Urdu version was assessed using inter-item correlations, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, and test-retest reliability. The inter-item correlations ranged from .58 to .88, indicating that all items are significantly related to each other. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .92 indicated that the scale is highly reliable and consistent. Finally, test-retest reliability was established by re-administering the scale to the same group of participants one month after the initial administration. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was .89, indicating that the scale has good test-retest reliability.
In conclusion, the Urdu version of the Family Support Scale is a reliable and valid tool for assessing the level of family support provided to stroke patients. Its ease of administration and reliable psychometric properties make it a suitable tool for use in stroke rehabilitation programs and research studies in Pakistan.
