Fiedler’s LPC Scale

Fiedler’s LPC Scale

Fiedler’s Least-Preferred Co-worker (LPC) scale is an instrument that evaluates leadership style based on the person’s attitude toward their “least-liked” co-worker. The LPC scale is designed to measure the leader’s orientation to the task versus a relationship. The LPC scale focuses on a person’s leadership style and seeks to determine whether the style is relationship-oriented or task-oriented.

To establish the LPC score, a person is asked to describe their least-preferred co-worker in terms of specific dimensions that reflect favorable and unfavorable views of the co-worker. The evaluator is then asked to assign scores to each dimension, making the assumptions about the satisfaction or dissatisfaction they would experience if they were to work with that person.

According to Fiedler’s Contingency Theory, high LPC scores indicate a relationship-oriented leader while low LPC scores suggest a task-oriented leader. Both types of leaders are equally effective and achieve success in their respective contexts.

The validity and reliability of the LPC scale have been examined by numerous researchers over the years. Studies have shown that the scale is a reliable measure of leadership style, with a high degree of internal consistency. However, the scale has been criticized for being too simplistic and not accounting for situational factors that may affect leadership style.

Despite its limitations, the LPC scale has been widely used to measure leadership style in various contexts, including business, military, and educational settings.
