Theories

There are the following four theories of attachment.

  • Secure
  • Avoidant
  • Anxious- Resistant
  • Disorganized

Secure 

The child became distressed when the parents leave, but is easily comforted when the parents return.

Avoidant 

The child is not distressed when the parents leave and ignore parents when they return. This is the child’s covert way of managing their anxiety.

Anxious-Resistant 

The child is distressed when a parent leaves, and seeks to punish the parents by displaying overt feelings such as anger.

Disorganized  

The child does not have a predictable pattern of attachment includes a child who displays signs of depression and disturbing behaviours.
