About Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescent Urdu
The Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) is an important assessment tool for identifying the presence and severity of social anxiety symptoms in adolescents. The objective of the present study was to translate and adapt the SAS-A into Urdu and estimate its reliability and validity in a Pakistani context.
Introduction:
The aim of this study was to translate and adapt the SAS-A into the national language of Pakistan, Urdu, with a focus on estimating its reliability and validity. The validation of the Urdu version of SAS-A holds significant importance in the context of Pakistan considering the dearth of validated psychological assessment tools in the Urdu language.
Translation of Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents and Estimation of its Psychometric Properties:
Forward and Back Translation:
The first step in the translation process was the forward and back translation of the scale by two independent bilingual translators. The two translators discussed the discrepancies and reached a consensus on the most accurate translation.
Expert Panel:
An expert panel of eight professionals, including two linguists and six clinical psychologists, examined the forward and back translation of the scale for content validity. The expert panel also discussed the adaptation of idiomatic expressions for relevance in the local culture.
Linguistic Equivalence/ Cross-Language Validation:
As part of estimating linguistic equivalence, the cross-language validation was conducted on a sample of adolescent students between the ages of 12-19 years. Bilingual individuals from the target group assessed the wording of the SAS-A items and rated their linguistic equivalence on a 4-point Likert scale. The language equivalence of the scale was estimated at 0.848 at the 0.01 alpha levels.
Reliability Estimates:
Internal Consistency: The SAS-A demonstrated good psychometric properties with high levels of internal consistency and reliability. The internal consistency was estimated at 0.872.
Test-Retest Reliability: The test-retest reliability of the SAS-A was estimated at 0.887, indicating high reliability over time.
Split Half Reliability: The split-half reliability of the SAS-A was estimated at 0.817, which demonstrates the consistency of the scale across different samples.
Validity:
Convergent Validity: To estimate the convergent validity of the SAS-A Urdu version, the researchers administered three scales: the Interaction Anxiousness Scale, the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation, and the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale. The correlation between the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) and the Interaction Anxiousness Scale was estimated at .34, and .32 and .59 correlations were estimated between SAS-A and the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation and Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale.
Conclusion:
The Urdu version of SAS-A demonstrated adequate reliability and convergent validity, making it a useful tool for identifying social anxiety symptoms in adolescent Pakistani populations.
