Teacher Efficacy Scale
The Teacher Efficacy Scale (TES) is a psychometric tool that quantitatively measures teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs. It is considered a crucial factor in the success of teaching practices overall. The scale is composed of 12 items that contribute to the measurement of both of two central aspects of self-efficacy in teaching: personal efficacy (PE) and teaching efficacy (TE). The TES is administered with a Likert-type rating scale (ranging from 1 to 9), where a higher score indicates greater efficacy beliefs.
To ensure that TES is a reliable tool, different tests have been conducted to ascertain its stability and consistency. For example, test-retest and internal consistency methods have been used to test its reliability. Test-retest reliability of the TES demonstrates that the scores obtained in repeated administrations often produce a strong positive correlation (r=.95). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for TES in the current study was .86, indicative of its good internal consistency.
Further, the construct validity of TES has also been acknowledged by the researchers. External validity was established through correlations between TES scores and measures of teacher burnout, construal of student motivation, emotion regulation, and teacher’s self-efficacy. This result reinforces that teachers’ self-efficacy is related to various motivational and attitudinal constructs, as well as the positive outcomes of teaching practices. Therefore, the TES gives an accurate measurement of the beliefs that teachers have about their self-efficacy in their professional roles.
In conclusion, the TES is a psychometrically sound instrument that measures the different aspects of teacher self-efficacy. It has been found to be both reliable and valid in various cultural contexts among diverse samples of teachers. By using this scale as a tool to co-create professional development activities, teachers can improve their sense of self-efficacy by learning to develop and refine strategies to harness their skills in the challenging realm of teaching.
