The 3 fatal mistakes that ruin our Christmas decorations
If we want to celebrate Christmas properly, we must not forget the crown. “It’s a very beautiful tradition. we must not lose it, says Franck Galibert Director of Collections at Habitat. It marks the Christmas period. It finds its place in an entryway or hung in a window.”
What about light garlands? Even if they have their place in our Christmas decor, we tend to leave them in our interiors the rest of the year, like in a vase for example.
1. Forgetting Christmas essentials
“It doesn’t have as much of a Christmas feel as before.” Other items not to be left aside include decorations in the shape of a tree, reindeer or snowman. We can place them on a coffee table, a piece of furniture, a bookcase.
“They are just as important as the crown. Christmas is a family celebration where joy and sharing reign. You have to have all these elements in a room that make you smile.”
2. Not having harmony in the decoration
Franck Galibert advises us to work in groups for a harmonious decoration. “We can have the Christmas wreath in one place, the tree, a polar bear or a reindeer in another… These elements must be centralized in spaces which are visual meeting points. When we walk into a room, we have to see them. Be careful, however, not to slip into heaviness and a mixture of styles.”
So as not to get distracted, the Habitat expert suggests that we choose a theme to respect in our interior and exterior. “You don’t have to say to yourself, I’m going to put a flashy green tree here, a very raw wooden deer there, and in another corner, a fir wreath with red bows. Harmony above all once again.”
3. Have an overloaded decoration
“The risk for outdoor Christmas decoration is wanting to tell too many stories. Of course, it’s very beautiful and visual, but you have to know how to limit yourself. A facade with garlands of curtains is a good idea, but there is no point in adding lights of another color to frame the windows or shutters. It’s not because we add a lot of decoration that it will be successful,” insists Franck Galibert. Hence the importance once again of defining a theme. Once we make our choice, we will know when to stop. The story we tell is clear.
“If we want to tell a story around the polar bear, we will try to include penguins and other animals from the ice floes, but not elements that stray too far from the subject.” The expert recommends that we not have too many different colors and shapes on the exterior. “You will have to make choices between stars and garland curtains, for example. It’s either one or the other, but not both.” We know what we have to do for a successful Christmas decoration inside and around our home.
