This may seem counter-gentle knowledge, but research indicates that this behavior can actually attract potential partners. But why can this dependence increase interest and promote the installation of intimate links?
A request for help as a romantic signal
The behavior of the demand for help is generally considered from two angles: autonomy, which strengthens freedom, and dependence, which highlights the need for help. Although dependence is often seen negatively in classic social contexts, this study has shown that it can have a beneficial effect in a romantic context.
According to the researchers, the demand for oriented help towards dependence sends a message of vulnerability, which can attract a partner. In romantic relationships, this vulnerability is interpreted as an attachment signal, thus promoting the installation of a more intimate relationship.
Effect of this strategy on attraction
To test this hypothesis, researchers conducted nine studies with 2,535 participants. The results have shown that, when romantic motivations were activated (for example, by romantic advertisements or love scenarios), people asked more dependent help.
In these cases, individuals have expressed more interest to those who were dependent, thus confirming that this type of demand is considered as a sign of romantic interest. In addition, people who provided help were more inclined to feel the attraction towards those who needed more “dependent” help.
Risk of strategy
However, this strategy is not without risk. Another aspect of the study has shown that, in pre -established relationships, partners can see this type of behavior as a danger.
