About Adolescent Pain Questionnaire (BAPQ)
The Bath Adolescent Pain Questionnaire (BAPQ) is a specialized tool designed to assess the impact of chronic pain on adolescents’ daily lives. Developed for both adolescents and their parents, the BAPQ aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how chronic pain affects physical, emotional, and social functioning in young individuals.
Purpose of the Tool
The BAPQ is intended to:
Measure the multidimensional impact of chronic pain on adolescents.
Offer insights into both self-reported and parental perspectives on pain-related challenges.
Facilitate a deeper understanding for clinicians and researchers in tailoring interventions that address both the physical and psychosocial aspects of chronic pain.
Description of Tool
Developed by Eccleston and colleagues, the BAPQ was initially created to address a gap in tools designed specifically for adolescents experiencing chronic pain. Recognizing the unique developmental and psychological challenges adolescents face, the BAPQ captures the nuanced effects of chronic pain during these formative years. The tool was later expanded to include a parent-report version (BAPQ-P), adding a valuable perspective on how parents observe the impact of their child’s pain.
The BAPQ is structured as a self-report questionnaire completed by the adolescent, with the BAPQ-P administered to their parents. This approach allows for multidimensional evaluation across areas such as:
- Physical functioning: capturing pain interference with daily activities and physical tasks.
- Emotional and social impact: assessing how pain affects emotional wellbeing, relationships, and social interactions.
- School participation: understanding pain’s influence on academic life and school attendance.
- Both the adolescent and parent versions contain parallel questions to allow comparison between the adolescent’s self-assessment and the parental perspective.
Psychometric Properties
- Reliability: Preliminary studies indicate strong internal consistency, with high reliability scores for both the adolescent and parent versions of the BAPQ.
- Validity: The BAPQ demonstrates good construct validity, capturing the intended aspects of pain impact on adolescents. The alignment of adolescent self-reports with parental reports also supports its validity as an accurate measure.
Age Group
The BAPQ is designed for adolescents aged 11–18 who experience chronic pain. The BAPQ-P complements this by capturing parental observations of adolescents within the same age group.
