Age Universal Religious Orientation Scale (AUROS)

Age Universal Religious Orientation Scale (AUROS)

The Age Universal Religious Orientation Scale (AUROS) used in this study is an appropriate and reliable tool for assessing religious orientation across different age groups and cultures. The scale, developed by Naidu et al. in 2017, has been validated through a rigorous process of item selection, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis.

AUROS consists of four sub-scales: intrinsic religious orientation, extrinsic-personal religious orientation, extrinsic-social religious orientation, and quest religious orientation. Each sub-scale has a number of items that assess the respondent’s beliefs, values, and practices related to religion. Intrinsic religious orientation refers to the extent to which an individual’s religious beliefs are integrated into their sense of self and identity. Extrinsic-personal religious orientation refers to the degree of religious involvement or commitment as a means of achieving personal goals. Extrinsic-social religious orientation is the degree to which one’s religious practices are influenced by social factors such as community and tradition. Quest religious orientation reflects a person’s questioning, seeking, and intellectual openness toward religion.

The internal consistency of the AUROS is high, with reported Cronbach’s alpha values ranging from 0.80 to 0.89 across the four sub-scales in this study. These values suggest that the items on each sub-scale are measuring a coherent concept and reliably differentiate between different religious orientations.
Overall, the AUROS scale provides a reliable and valid measure for assessing religious orientation and will be a useful tool for similar studies on religious coping and psychological distress.
