Personal Strain Questionnaire Urdu
The Personal Strain Questionnaire (PSQ) is a self-report measure developed to examine the negative impacts of stress on individuals’ health and well-being. This questionnaire was also adapted in Urdu alongside English to facilitate understanding easily in Pakistan. The PSQ is anchored around the General Strain Theory (GST), which draws from Agnew’s (1992) work, proposing that stressors lead to feelings of anger, frustration, and resentment.

The PSQ consists of 40 items measured on a 4-point Likert-style scale, where participants rate items on a 4-point scale ranging from 1 = not at all to 4 = completely. The questions address the extent to which one has felt different types of pressures or difficulties in the preceding month. The variable assessed by the questionnaire can be divided into four different groups: psychological, interpersonal, work-related and physical.
The reliability and validity of the PSQ has been researched, and it was found to have good reliability and validity. A study conducted by Shamim et al. (2020) collected data from a national survey that included 753 participants from different regions of Pakistan. The PSQ was found to have acceptable internal consistency, with an overall Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.83 for the entire scale. The test-retest reliability of the PSQ has also been examined and been found to be high, with a statistically non-significant difference between the test and retest scores.
In conclusion, the Personal Strain Questionnaire (PSQ) in Urdu has emerged as a viable and reliable instrument to assess the negative impacts of stress, physical, and emotional health consequences. Its reliability and validity make it a suitable tool for use in research, advocacy, and clinical settings in Pakistan.
