Researchers from the Netherlands’ Leiden University’s institute for psychological research evaluated the effects of probiotics on “cognitive reactivity” in a study. A person’s susceptibility to depression is demonstrated by a “known sign of vulnerability to depression,” according to the authors. As a result, reducing cognitive reactivity is seen as an “essential target for therapies”.

non-depressed people were given the following probiotics to test:

  • Bifidobacterium bifidum W23
  • Bifidobacterium lactis W52
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus W37
  • Lactobacillus brevis W63
  • Lactobacillus casei W56
  • Lactobacillus salivarius W24
  • Lactococcus lactis (W19 and W58).

There were 20 healthy subjects who had never been diagnosed with a good condition. For four weeks, they were given a multi-species probiotic meal supplementation regimen. For the same period of time, 20 “control individuals” got an inert placebo.

Before and after the intervention, the revised Leiden depression sensitivity index was used to measure participants’ cognitive reactivity to low mood.

A “significant” decrease in cognitive reactivity to depressive moods was observed in those who took the probiotic supplementation as compared to those who took a placebo. Repetitive thoughts and “aggressive thoughts” decreased in people who took placebos.

The researchers found that “the ingestion of probiotics may help lessen negative thoughts associated with a melancholy mood”.
