Problem Assessment Scale
The Problem Assessment Scale (PAS) is a widely used self-report instrument used to assess the evaluation of psychosocial stressors and the strategies used to manage daily problems or long-term stressful situations. The PAS is divided into two parts: assessing an individual’s stressors and coping strategies for those stressors.

The PAS consists of 52 items scaled from 0 to 5, with 0 indicating “no current stress” and 5 indicating “extremely stressful situation.” Each item represents a different hypothetical situation and corresponds to a relevant stressor in the individual’s life. The respondents are asked to rate the degree of stressful influence of these stressful experiences based on their current situations.
The reliability of the PAS has been found to be high in terms of internal consistency because Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranged from 0.88 to 0.92 for different items. It also has a considerable test-retest reliability level. The PAS has excellent content validity, indicating its content relates to its purpose. It results in almost all subscales correlated with anxiety, depression, stressful life events, and related measures.
Various studies have evaluated the reliability and validity of the PAS scale, and the results suggest the PAS is highly reliable and a valid tool for measuring the assessment of stressors and coping strategies used to deal with stressful events effectively. Therefore, the PAS questionnaire is considered a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating the diverse stressors and the strategies for coping with the stressors encountered by people in day-to-day life.
