The current study utilizes the Sexual Harassment Experience Questionnaire (SHEQ) to gauge the experiences of workplace sexual harassment among women in Pakistan. The SHEQ, offered in both Urdu and English, categorizes harassment into three dimensions: gender harassment, unwanted sexual attention, and sexual coercion. The questionnaire comprises 35 items, with responses recorded on a 4-point Likert scale ranging from “never” to “always.”

The SHEQ’s development transpires across four phases, employing independent samples. This process mirrors the development of the Sexual Experience Questionnaire (SEQ) by Fitzgerald et al. (1988). Studies conducted during SHEQ’s development yielded favorable results, suggesting its reliability and validity.

Internal consistency, a measure of item coherence within the questionnaire, was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha analysis to establish SHEQ’s reliability. The SHEQ demonstrated substantial reliability with an internal consistency coefficient of .84. Additionally, domain-specific reliability ranged from .73 to .78, further indicating good internal consistency.

Construct validity analysis, which evaluates the alignment between a questionnaire and the theoretical constructs it measures, was employed to establish SHEQ’s validity. Exploratory factor analysis confirmed the three hypothesized harassment dimensions by extracting three distinct factors.

Convergent validity, reflecting the correlation of the SHEQ with similar harassment measures, was assessed by computing correlation coefficients. The results revealed substantial positive and significant correlations, supporting the SHEQ as a valid measure of workplace sexual harassment.

In conclusion, the SHEQ presents itself as a reliable and valid instrument for measuring women’s experiences of sexual harassment in Pakistani workplaces. The rigorous development process, coupled with satisfactory reliability and validity, positions the SHEQ as a valuable tool for researchers investigating this specific area.
