Stop giving this type of advice that affects self-esteem
Have you ever received advice that seemed irrelevant or even condescending? These interactions, although seemingly harmless, can have a profound impact on self-esteem, especially in women. A study published in psychological sciencee highlights the negative impact of so-called “non-responsive” advice.
Whether this advice is given by a man or a woman, the people who receive it have a diminished sense of respect and power.
Non-Responsive Advice: A Problematic Form of Conversation
Researchers define “non-responsive” advice as unsolicited, general, and directive. These recommendations, which are often divorced from the recipient’s actual needs, give the impression of a lack of listening and empathy. In a series of studies conducted on over 4,000 women, participants expressed increased feelings of disrespect, loss of power, and decreased self-esteem after receiving this type of advice.
These interactions are not limited to informal contexts. When they occur in professional environments, they may increase feelings of discomfort, or even reinforce gender stereotypes. Women then feel diminished by their group membership rather than recognized for their skills or ideas.
A universal effect, but with nuances depending on the genre
Importantly, the negative impact of non-responsive advice does not depend on the gender of the person giving it. However, when this advice comes from a man, it intensifies a phenomenon called “stereotype threat.”
This feeling reinforces the idea that the person is viewed through stereotypes associated with their gender, which can increase stress and feelings of inferiority.
Responsive Advice for Caring Communication
In contrast to unsolicited advice, so-called “reactive” recommendations are distinguished by their relevance and personalization. This advice, which responds directly to expressed needs, strengthens the feeling of respect and belonging.
Study participants reported that they felt more heard and valued when their interlocutors asked open-ended questions or offered solutions tailored to their specific concerns.
