Bedroom: 4 decorating secrets for restful sleep
A good night’s sleep helps us have a good day. We are less tired and less on edge. However, a survey carried out by Santé Publique France reveals that the French are sleeping less and less. On average, we sleep 6 hours 42 minutes per night. We have therefore fallen below the threshold of “the minimum 7 hours per day usually recommended for good recovery”.
This decline in sleep can be caused by too much screen time before going to bed, insomnia or even stress. What if the solution was found in the layout of our bedroom? Follow the leader.
1. Focus on light and soothing colors
What if we found more peaceful nights thanks to the decoration of our room, in particular thanks to color? Alexandra Viragh, author of Feng Shui books, advises us to choose yin colors, therefore colder, such as beige, blue, gray or even purple.
“They help us relax. You should avoid so-called yang colors like red, orange or gold. Sleep is less peaceful, we want to talk more, to express ourselves.”
2. Choose the right location for our bed
The position of our bed in the bedroom can have an influence on the quality of our sleep. According to Feng Shui principles, it is advisable not to sleep near a door, window or mirror. “We are more nervously stimulated. Our body is not relaxed before going to sleep” indicates Alexandra Viragh. What arrangements should be made then? We must take care to position the bed so that our head is either to the north or to the east.
An orientation to the East would bring positive energies and concentration. On the other hand, we must avoid sleeping with our heads to the west. Our nights may be more restless. If we have a mirror, it is better to install it inside a closet. Finally, it is advisable to place our bed so that we have a view of the bedroom door.
3. Find the right temperature
How many times have we woken up because of chills or night sweats? Too cold, too hot, it is not always easy to find the right temperature in our room. According to a study by the National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance, 40% of French people are bothered by the temperature when falling asleep. Another figure: 42% are likely to be woken up by the temperature.
This same study reveals to us that “it is better to cool the bedroom, even if it means adjusting the temperature with bedding and nightwear adapted to each person’s particularities”. The survey reveals that the ideal temperature is between 16 and 18 degrees. Not only do the airways become more comfortable, but sleep is of better quality.
4. Have a tidy bedroom
A tidy bedroom is a bedroom conducive to sleep. Before we go to bed, it is important to declutter it. Why not set up a little ritual where we take the time to put away what is on the floor and on the bed? A good way to free our mind and our room. To save space, it is better to avoid installing large pieces of furniture such as imposing cupboards and chests of drawers. We gain fluidity in space.
Numerous studies have proven the influence of screens on our sleep. When evening comes, we must try to keep them away from our bedroom. We can put them in a drawer or leave them in another room in the house. The mere sight of them is enough to remind us that we still have tasks to complete for work, and to prevent us from relaxing before bed.
