Siddiqui Shah Depression Scale Urdu
The Siddiqui Shah Depression Scale (SSDS) Urdu Version is a self-report tool used to measure depression among Pakistani adolescents. The reliability and validity of this assessment are considered to be important indicators of its effectiveness in the field of research.
The scale has been developed and tested among a sample of 200 participants, that included 100 clinical and 100 non-clinical adults in order to ensure the reliability and validity of the scale. The scale is an adaptation of the original English version, which was developed by Siddiqui and Shah (1994). The aim of the Urdu version is to provide a culturally relevant and valid tool in the diagnosis of depression within the Pakistani population.
The SSDS Urdu Version has a 34-item pool, which the individual rates on a 4-point Likert scale (0 to 3), taking ten minutes to complete. Each item reflects the experience of a depressive symptom. The validity of the scale has been established by its high correlation with other standardized depression assessments, such as the Beck Depression Inventory (r= 0.76) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (r= 0.72).
Furthermore, the scale exhibited good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α= 0.91) and inter-rater reliability (ICC=0.89). The test-retest reliability was also found to be excellent (r= 0.85). These results demonstrate that SSDS Urdu Version is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring depression in a Pakistani population.
Overall, SSDS Urdu Version is a culturally sensitive and valid tool that can be useful in assessing depression in Pakistani adolescents. The scale has exhibited strong reliability and validity in its ability to assess depressive symptoms. Therefore, clinicians and researchers may use it with confidence in the assessment and diagnosis of depression among Pakistani adolescents.
